Claudius II Gothicus. Aureus
Claudius II Gothicus. Aureus, 5.15gg. (6h). Milan, 268 AD. Obv: IMP.C[L]AV - DIVS.AVG Bust laureate, draped, cuirassed right. Rx: [P]AX - E - X - ERC Pax standing left holding branch and transverse scepter. RICē online 10 (8 spec., all from the same die pair as ours). RIC first ed. 176 (R2, misattributed to Siscia). Cohen 208 (800 Fr.). Very rare. Holed in antiquity; otherwise Mint State.

Aurei of Claudius II were very rare in Cohen's day, the various types being priced by him at between 800 and 1200 francs each, but have become commoner since the discovery of the Lava Hoard in the sea off Corsica in 1957 and later years.
