Attica, Athens. Tetradrachm
Attica, Athens. c. 520-500 BC, "Civic Mint". Tetradrachm, 16.96gg. (3h). Obv: Helmeted head of Athena right. Rx: Owl standing right, head front; olive sprig at upper left, ΑΘΕ downwards on right, all in incuse square. Not in Seltman or Svoronos. This is one of the trial coins minted by the Athenians in the short period from 520-500 BC where they were experimenting to see what design they wanted to use for future tetradrachms. Some encrustation at the bottom of Athena's neck. Good VF/EF.
