Founded before the Romans and famous for being the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, Genoa was also known for being a commanding seaport during the Middle Ages. While Genoa was technically a dominant communal republic, the colonial power fashioned itself as an oligarchy ruled by a group of merchant families. It was from these families that the Doges of Genoa were ultimately chosen.
